So, this week I have spent more time than I usually would laying the groundwork for the senior project. Essentially this week because TED Talk week. We watched three separate talks related to leadership and spent significant time sharing our reactions, connections, and emerging ideas. Students were engaged in the process and the time brought us together as a group as we begin to tackle the senior project.
The idea of like-mindedness emerged in our discussion and it helped me to better explain the importance of who you have in your senior project group. Hopefully students take the risk to rely on their heart and passion to lead the way into the unknown - if they do they will experience much more success.
That said, I understand as the weather warms and the number of required attendance days diminishes students will encounter varied stages of "senioritis". Whom this affects and how it affects their progress in class in not within the realm of my control. My desire for their success cannot be greater than their personal desire for success. Fortunately, the students in my classroom are motivated individuals who are truly seeking projects that set their hears afire. For this I am grateful.
Senior projects are much more than an exercise meant to sponge up time in the waning days of a public school education. Instead they are authentic applications of multidisciplinary work which culminates in personal perspectives of where they want to see themselves in the world they have been preparing to enter.
