During the past few years I have shifted my focus when it comes to the first project in ELA 12A. This year I have decided to focus on the power of story and intentionally ask students to dig deep in their thinking as they share the stories of how they came to a belief they hold close to their heart. Instead of moving directly to the writing and videos, I opted to focus on storytelling by sharing examples orally; demonstrating how connections are better made through story; and asking students to explore what storytelling experts have to say about their crafts. I am well pleased with the results that are emerging. Students are not working for a grade - they are genuinely interested in carefully crafting their pieces. A few students have shared their work with me and I am impressed with the care they are taking in telling their stories. My prediction? These will be some of the most powerful This I Believe stories to date. Giving quality time results in quality achievements.
