What were the main ideas we learned this past week?
I am learning far more than I ever thought I would in Mr. Schoenborn's classes--every class period I continue to find new ideas that will help me in my future classroom. Today, for example, in first hour, Mr. Schoenborn had me model with the students the PoW essay prompt. It was one thing to hear about the importance of modeling, but another thing entirely to actually be the one modeling--to know that students are watching the struggle of someone who is supposed to know all the answers is something that will take some getting used to. I understand why it is important though--writing is a struggle, and as a teacher I need to struggle with my students in order to learn more.
In my education classes, we always talk about how it is important to create a community, but none of my professors are able to tell me how to establish that community. Today, a student asked if he could read a poem he brought in to start the class. Instead of sticking with his plan, Mr. Schoenborn altered his lesson and let the student read it. This creates a community because it allows students to be express themselves.
