What do I still need to work on more?
This week I have spent a lot of time setting students up for success and teachers say repeatedly that if students just followed the instructions given in class, they would have no difficulty. I have taken this to heart this year and spent time to be very clear and precise about what is expected in class. It seems to me that students who have difficulty focusing are the ones who are not practiced with good study habits. That said, the learning process is a painful one. In order for students to learn they need to push themselves outside of their comfort zone. Some are readily willing to do this on their own, where others need practice.
I am focused on helping students practice the habits that will help them reach the goals they don't already have for themselves. We talked about audience, participation, and reader perception. It helped students to realize the way they portray themselves is the way they will be perceived. An example I used in class was to focus on their grammar habits. Now, I am no grammar Nazi, but I recognize how readers view blatant errors. Just take a moment to look at the grammar memes created to mock those who lack in this area.
