How did we come to know and understand the ideas we learned this week? Unfortunately students are used to being spoon fed information. Follow these directions, check off these boxes, turn in assignments, and get the next set of instructions. My concerns about this approach are many, and I wonder where is the space and time provided for thinking. Critical thinking seems to be lacking so much among the students that I work with and when I ask them to do so, they are very resistant. This is understandable because, I fear, they were just passed on with a grade of some sort. The trouble with a lack a critical thinking is that it emerges during times of stress. To understand how to share your perspective and support it is to understand how to get what you want in life. To combat this I have chosen to guide my students toward experiences that are thought provoking and ask them to write collaboratively about the ideas. |
