What were the main ideas we learned this past week?
Every week I seem to learn more and more about what I want to do as a teacher. The work that we take part in during this class helps to form many ideas and beliefs that I have as a teacher and a learner.
This week I was able to see the power of using multiple texts to present information and convey meaning. We usually think of text as simply some sort of writing, as a book, a magazine, a journal article, or a poem. Using multimedia as a text is a powerful way to engage students. I could see the attention level and engagement of the class excel when using various forms of text, instead of just the traditional idea of a text. This is important for me as an educator to use many forms of text to reach different learners.
From working in class and taking part in IEP meetings throughout the week, I have learned that I need to be more accommodating with my students and their needs. I am learning ways to more efficiently and effectively make sure that I truly know what my students are learning. I need to be more flexible and understanding with the various abilities in my classroom. This area of my profession is something that I will always be working on and improving. With more practice and experience, I will continue to grow when accommodating all of my students.
Collaboration with a more experienced teacher has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and try new ideas as an educator. This has been helpful for me in all of the classes that I teach. We are both working on trying to step back and allow students to learn for themselves. We want to encourage critical and independent thinking skills. We are hoping to give students problems to solve rather than answers to memorize.
