In week 7, I had the opportunity to meet with each group to ask students about how they are progressing on their literature projects. Many groups seem to be piecing together their presentations about particular elements of fiction through various texts. I learned that every group is going to progress at different rates, and that's okay. This may be due to the fact that some texts are much longer than others, or that students may be first writing notes for themselves to better organize their presentations. Throughout the week, students had some time to workshop and work collaboratively with their groups. I saw that through these discussions, students were continuing to develop a deeper understanding of texts through analyzing them through different lenses. For large projects like this, I will definitely teach mini lessons about areas students have questions about, particularly how to effectively structure a presentation in a logical and cohesive manner. It has been valuable for me to see how Mr. Schoenborn introduces new topics, allows students to engage with them, and then assess what students are understanding.
I am happy to see that some of the pedagogical approaches in 12th grade AP Literature and Composition are ones that I have become familiar with through my own methods courses. I really like how Mr. Schoenborn is introducing essential elements of a presentation using literature through a critical inquiry approach. Students are asked to consider the big question, and "so what?" In doing so, he is providing students with multiple opportunities to think about texts in a meaningful way.
