The beginning of a new trimester is always an interesting endeavor. By now much of what we do in class feels routine and comfortable - this is a good thing - because we are in the flow of the work of readers and writers. Perhaps my favorite part of the a new trimester is reading the final reflective pieces students write for their exam. I learn more about my teaching and pedagogy during that practice than any other reflection. My students taught me how much they like creative writing and poem of the week explorations. The creative writing praise didn't surprise me, because who doesn't like to have the freedom to write what they please. I was, however, surprised by the number of students who mentioned they missed the poem of the week. My past experiences with the PoW had students groaning, but this group is different - they are soaking it all up - and I like that. The more experience I gain as a facilitator of learning the more I learn to set up the on and off ramps and then get out of the way.
